February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 42

1984 Morgan 4/4

Registration - A423 MDY

Chassis No. - C6500

M.O.T. - January 2023

Odometer - 55,348

‘A423 MDY’ has led a peaceful life for the last seven years, as its only road trips have been to the MOT station and back. However, it has been started and run on a regular basis and also benefited from a substantial degree of refurbishment as recently as 2019/2020. This included the fitting of a pair of new wings followed by a total bare metal respray in green, that’s complemented by all new cream-coloured interior trim in place of the previous red upholstery. The mechanicals have also had their fair share of attention, with the Ford CVH engine and four-speed manual gearbox receiving a complete overhaul, and many replacement parts fitted to the suspension, brake and fuel systems. Taking the restoration work into account, the vendor now classes the engine, transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ order, and is offering the Moggie complete with hood (‘which would benefit from cleaning and resealing’), registration documents, a large history file documenting the restoration, and past MOT certificates plus a current one valid right through to January 11 next year.

Apart from a break for WWII and another brief one in the early ‘50s, Morgan’s 4/4 model was in continuous production from 1936 to 2019 - ie and astonishing 83 years. It was in fact the company’s first four-wheeled car and the name quite simply stood for 4 wheels/4 cylinders. The so-called 4/4 1600 was manufactured from 1968 through to 1993, during which time no less than four different 1600cc powerplants were employed – ie the crossflow Ford Kent unit, Fiat twin-cam, Ford CVH and lastly the CVH EFI. A total of 5,448 4/4 1600s were made.

In summary:

  • Off the road for the last seven years, but regularly started and MOT’d
  • Extensively restored between 2019 and 2020
  • Comes complete with comprehensive history file
