November 2021 Classics Auction

  Lot 42

1990 Volvo 740 GL
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - G393 VYO

Chassis No. - YV1745243L2300998

M.O.T - August 2022

Odometer - 39,475

‘G393 VYO’ was the vendor’s company car, which he purchased from his employer in 1995, making the ‘much loved’ Volvo effectively a one-owner vehicle, which he is only selling due to the change in ULEZ regulations. He informs us that it is in ‘very good mechanical and electrical order and is rust free’. Evidently the body has only required minor repairs over the years and the Volvo has recently benefited from a new clutch and exhaust system. Well equipped, it boasts a manual sunroof, electric front windows and door mirrors, heated front seats, and external rear electrics for towing etc. The vendor currently grades the 2.0-litre engine and manual transmission as ‘excellent’, the bodywork as ‘good’ and the red paintwork and grey cloth interior trim as ‘below average’. He very honestly volunteers that ‘the rear seats no longer fold down, the code for the stereo has been lost, the mileage is unknown and the Volvo currently wears a mixed selection of hubcaps’. It is now offered complete with an MOT to August 1 next year and at ‘No Reserve’.

Volvo’s 700 series of executive saloons and estate cars remained in production from 1982 to 1992, during which time no less than 1,430,000 examples were produced. The 740 model slotted in below the top-of-the-range 760 as the more affordable option of the two. Both were offered in saloon and estate guise, the latter proving to be a massive load carrier that found instant popularity among all manner of motorists from the Scandinavian police to British antique dealers. The 700 series was ultimately replaced by the 900 one, but good 740s and 760s are still sought by those who recognise a good load-lugger when they see one.

In summary:

  • Effectively a one owner car from new
  • Annual services by a Volvo-trained mechanic
  • MOT’d into August of next year
