March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 43

1954 Austin Champ
Ex Territorial Army

Registration - 253 YUN

Chassis No. - 7360

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 40,957

This impressive and very original-looking Champ is understood to have served in the Territorial Army. Manufactured in 1954, it was first UK registered four years later. Still finished in military livery, its green bodywork is teamed with a green canvas tilt and tan vinyl interior trim. As per its original specification, it is equipped with tow hook, exterior-mounted spade, pick-axe and 20-litre water can, twin rear-mounted radio aerials, 24-volt isolator switch and period brass fire extinguisher. It rides on chunky Deestone all-terrain tyres. The vendor presently classes the engine and transmission as ‘excellent’, the bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’, and the paintwork as ‘average’. He is now offering ‘253 YUN’ complete with a 70-year-old service manual and selection of documents including ones relating to the truck’s time in the Territorial Army. The odometer currently registers a total mileage of 40,957. A perfect passport into the world of militaria or a fun alternative to the more common Jeeps and Land Rovers.

Inspired by the ubiquitous American Jeep, the Champ was a British military vehicle designed immediately post WWII and manufactured from 1951 to 1956, at which point it was supplanted by the cheaper Land Rover. The lightweight 4x4 was powered by an Austin-built Rolls-Royce-designed four-cylinder petrol engine of 2838cc. Ultimately only 11,732 of the contracted 15,000 Champs were produced, all of which had been moved from front line army service to the territorial Army by the mid ‘60s, and were then sold into the private domain from 1968. Though their service life was curtailed by cost, they boasted impressive cross-country capabilities and could even touch 50mph in reverse – something neither the Jeep nor Land Rover could match.

In summary:

  • A tidy example that served with the Territorial Army
  • Comes complete with original spec. spade, pick-axe, water can etc
  • Currently displaying a total mileage of 40,957
