The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 43

1971 MGB GT
Fitted with overdrive transmission

Registration - CEL 128K

Chassis No. - GHD5254988G

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 89,345

We understand that ‘CEL 128K’ was fully restored around 10 years ago, work that included a complete rebuild of the venerable B Series engine and replacement of the seats. Originally finished in blue, the GT was resprayed in its current shade of red in 1984, a livery that matches perfectly with the black and polished wood interior trim, red carpet, and silver-painted wire wheels. The MG has had a total of 11 keepers to date, the most recent of whom acquired the car in June last year. He presently rates the engine, and overdrive gearbox a ‘excellent’, the bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’ and the paintwork as ‘average’, and is now offering the car complete with glass sunroof, Panasonic radio/CD player, wood-rim steering wheel, pair of quarterlight-mounted rear view mirrors and a fire extinguisher. The current mileage cannot be verified as the speedometer, and therefore the odometer, are not currently functioning.

Introduced in May 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings, reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. It was initially only available in roadster form – the Pininfarina-penned hatchback GT derivative with 2+2 seating not being offered until October 1965. The MKII model of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with revised ratios and synchromesh on all gears, an improved rear axle, and a switch from dynamo to alternator. In 1969, Rostyle wheels replaced the previous pressed steel versions for standard fit. With the MKIII derivative of 1972 came a new facia and improved heater. However, the biggest visual change in the car’s history occurred two years later, when steel reinforced plastic bumpers replaced the chrome ones and the ride height was raised by one inch. These changes were demanded by the American market, which had accounted for much of the car’s production from day one.

By the time GT production ceased in October 1980, a total of 125,282 had been produced.

In summary:

  • The subject of a full restoration some 10 years ago
  • Resprayed from blue to the current shade of red in 1984
  • Comes with overdrive, glass sunroof and Panasonic audio
