1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe

This delightfully original Karmann Ghia was imported from Japan to Germany in March 2016 and then to the UK in June 2020. It has been in the current ownership for four years now, during which time the vendor has commissioned minor repairs to what he describes as ‘an already super solid car’ – ie the battery tray, front heater channels, rear floors and the outer sills have all been professionally restored. He informs us that the bodywork is very straight and ninety percent of the paintwork is believed to be original, so can be forgiven a few age related marks and scratches. We understand the interior is all original bar the steering wheel (the factory-fitted one is included in the sale), and that the dashboard is ‘slightly cracked’ and the door cards and glovebox lid are ‘a little tatty’. The engine is thought to be the original unit and is said to run perfectly and free of smoke, rattles and oil leaks. As a result of the car’s very pleasing overall condition the vendor believes the indicated mileage of 80,264 kilometres (50,165 miles) is probably correct. A rare opportunity.
Particularly aimed at the American market, the immortally striking Karmann Ghia 2+2 was Volkswagen’s answer to creating a halo model for its unashamedly austere Beetle range. Available in both coupe and convertible guise, it was styled by Luigi Segre of Carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built around Beetle mechanicals by the famed German coachbuilder Karmann of Osnabrück – hence the name. German production ran from 1955 to 1974, during which 445,238 examples were built, of which 364,401 were coupes like the sales car and 80,837 were cabriolets. A further 41,689 were constructed in Brazil between 1962 and 1975.
