May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 43

1986 Volkswagen Golf GTi Christmas Cabriolet

Registration - D794 MOK

Chassis No. - WVWZZZ15ZGK008913

M.O.T. - Expired

Odometer - 76,401

Resplendent in its original livery of Polar White bodywork and blue fabric convertible roof, this VW Golf Cabriolet CC (ie Christmas Cabriolet) is a particularly eye-catching example, thanks to the addition of a set of stylish Porsche-badged wide-rim alloy wheels and low-profile tyres. Its paintwork is believed to be original (with the possible exception of that on the bonnet), while the hood appears to be in good order with no obvious rips or tears and the blue fabric interior trim presents in a similar condition. The odometer presently displays an unwarranted but very credible 76,401 miles from new, and we are informed that the CC received its all-important cam-belt change and service along with new plug leads in 2021, and has been subjected to little mileage since - a bonus for the next owner. The vendor currently considers the Golf’s 1781cc engine, five-speed manual gearbox, two-door convertible bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ order, and is now selling this sun-ready convertible complete with Panasonic radio/cassette and anodised alloy racing-style pedals.

The Cabriolet version of the Golf first saw the light of day in 1979. Volkswagen subcontracted the work to Karmann of Osnabrück, who carried out every process from the stamping of the bodies to the final assembly. The specification remained virtually unchanged until the MKI Cabriolet was replaced in 1993 by one based on the Golf MKIII. With only 40 versions of the CC special edition thought to remain of the 750 produced in the run up to Christmas 1985, this rare Golf could well prove to be a canny investment for its next keeper.

In summary:

  • An eye-catching convertible equipped with Porsche-badged alloy wheels and low-profile tyres
  • A rare special-edition model of which only 40 examples are thought to remain
  • Little mileage covered since cam-belt change and service
