The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 44

1970 MG Midget
Built by the well-known MG tuner Frontline Developments in 2010

Registration - BYO 3994

Chassis No. - GANS-80749C

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 00388

Make no mistake, this is no ordinary Midget, but one of just five such fast road examples built by MG specialist Frontline Developments of Abingdon using a 1970 donor car. The cost even 12 years ago was in excess of £20,000, so would be a great deal more now. Out went the original engine and gearbox to be replaced by a brand new 1800cc VVC K Series unit mated to a Type 9 five-speed Ford gearbox complete with new close ratio gears, quick shift linkage and uprated clutch. The engine benefits from: stretch bolts, the latest type head gasket, uprated lower oil rail, ‘Emerald’ ECU, remote oil filter, Frontline alloy radiator, alloy header tank, silicone hoses, electric fan, high pressure fuel pump, swirl pot and stainless steel exhaust system, and when tested on a rolling road showed in excess of 170bhp. Underneath will be found Frontline front and rear suspension including adjustable Avo dampers, anti-tramp bars and traction link. The uprated driveline features chrome alloy half shafts and a limited slip differential. The braking system includes large vented front discs and four-pot calipers and a hydraulic handbrake. The Lotus high back seats are equipped with four-points harnesses and this tiny tiger rides on a set of replica Minilite alloy wheels. ‘BYO 399H’ is summarised by the vendor as having ‘excellent’ engine and transmission, ‘good’ bodywork and black interior trim, and ‘average’ red paintwork.

The MKIII version of MG’s mighty Midget was produced from 1966 to 1974. As standard it was powered by a 1275cc version of the ubiquitous A Series engine that produced a relatively lowly 65bhp.

In summary:

  • One of only five such ‘fast road’ Midgets created by Frontline Developments
  • The build cost exceeded £20,000 back in 2010
  • Specification includes 170bhp K Series engine and Ford Type 9 gearbox
