March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 44

1972 Volkswagen Short-wheelbase GT Beach Buggy
GT SWB body, believed to be one of six examples

Registration - UJW 964L

Chassis No. - 1142248511

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 4,154

This immaculate buggy was professionally built to a very high standard, and is based on a fully restored and shortened 1972 Beetle chassis that was blasted, painted and then fully Waxoyled before assembly. It is powered by a previously rebuilt 1600cc twin-port Beetle engine that features all new electrics and distributor; a Dellorto 36 DRLA twin-choke carburettor mounted on a heated siamesed inlet manifold; a handmade-stainless steel exhaust system. The four-speed manual gearbox and suspension, brakes and steering systems were all rebuilt using new parts where required. The fuel system was uprated courtesy of a Facet solid state pump and Malpassi pressure regulator. The original wheels were refinished in Diamond White and shod with Cooper Cobra tyres all round. An all new wiring loom was installed, along with aerospace specification switches and a high intensity facia light to warn of fan belt or generator failure. The front seat occupants sit in early-style low back seats attached to stainless steel runners. The suspension settings have been fully optimised and the engine set up by renowned tuning wizard Peter Baldwin. The UK-built GT body is finished in Ford Focus ST pearlescent orange and the interior trimmed in black vinyl.

‘UJW 964L’ was sympathetically restored in 2005 by Lola Cars International. Further work within the last year to the tune of £2,000 has included a top end engine rebuild, and repainting and rechroming of the relevant engine parts. The vendor now judges the buggy to be in ‘excellent’ all-round condition and says it ‘runs and drives superbly’. The odometer currently registers a total mileage of 4,154.

GT beach buggies were among the products of GT Mouldings of Portslade, Brighton. The company was founded by James Hale and remained in existence from 1981 to 2007. The GT comprised a Volkswagen Beetle chassis clothed in an open four-seater fibreglass body. Total production numbers are vague, but it is known that some five or six versions were specially built with a 30cm shorter wheelbase, of which the sale car is one.

In summary:

  • An immaculately built and presented GT Buggy
  • Understood to be one of only c.six short-wheelbase versions
  • Restored by Lola Cars in 2005
