November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 45

2001 Maserati 3200 GTA
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - RK51 RWN

Chassis No. - ZAMAA38D00003317

M.O.T. - TBC

Odometer - 97,994

It’s hard to credit that the design of Giugiaro’s 3200 GT is now over 20 years old, the sleek shape of which still demands attention. This example was first registered in December 2001. Its metallic grey coachwork is teamed with burgundy-coloured hide interior trim and the Maserati rides on period-correct 15-spoke alloy wheels. According to Experian Autocheck, the GTA has had a total of 10 keepers to date who have between them amassed a total of 97,994 miles. The vendor currently considers the V8 engine, four-speed automatic transmission and upholstery to be in ‘good’ condition and the two-door bodywork and paintwork as being in ‘average’ order. He is now offering the car complete with a large file of old MOTs and invoices, including some relating to services by renowned marque specialist Graypaul, and one for the reconditioned engine that was installed in 2012.

The Maserati 3200 GT (Tipo 338) broke cover in 1998. It was a svelte four-seat luxury coupe styled by Italdesign whose founder, Giorgetto Giugiaro, had penned such past classics as the Ghibli, Bora and Merak for Maserati. The front-engined, rearwheel drive car was powered by a version of the twin-turbo 3.2-litre V8 engine found in the Quattroporte IV and Shamal, retuned to give 365bhp. There was the option of six-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic unit manufactured by the Australian company BTR; examples equipped with the latter were known as 3200 GTAs. The 3200 GT reigned until 2002, when it was replaced by the 4.2-litre Maserati Coupe, by which time 4,795 Tipo 338s had been manufactured, 2,106 of which featured the automatic transmission as fitted to the sale car.

In summary:

  • Presented in the pleasing combination of metallic grey coachwork and burgundy hide trim
  • Benefits from having a reconditioned engine fitted in 2012
  • Being sold at No Reserve
