May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 46

1962 Jaguar MKII 3.8
A beautiful home-market, matching numbers example, offered with Heritage Certificate

Registration - 3777 UK

Chassis No. - 208069DN

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 49,850

If asked to pick a specification for a dream MKII Jaguar, many enthusiasts would subconsciously describe this very car. A matching numbers example, it is finished in the for-ever-desirable combination of Gunmetal Grey bodywork paired with red leather upholstery. The effect is enhanced by a set of chrome wire wheels and, to cap it all, ‘3777 UK’ even has the most sought-after engine/transmission combination – ie the optional 3.8-litre XK powerplant matched to a manual gearbox with overdrive. Having come off line on March 30 1962, the car was despatched to dealer Charles Attwood & Son of Wolverhampton late the following month. According to the buff and green logbooks that accompany the Jaguar, it had two owners prior to 1966, in which year it was acquired by a Mr Roy Newport Francis. He, and subsequently his son, then retained it until 2012, at which point it passed to a new keeper in the Midlands, who kept it until earlier this year. The MKII was apparently treated to an engine rebuild and bare metal repaint in 2012, as well a general refresh and certain upgrades – eg the electrical system was switched from positive to negative earth and the dynamo replaced by an alternator. The vendor informs us that the Jaguar ‘has been Waxoyled every two years, runs very well with good oil pressure, is fast, and possesses a pleasant gearchange and strong brakes’.

Currently registering an unwarranted by eminently credible total mileage of 49,850, this lovely home market motorcar is a rare specimen in having retained its original engine, transmission, colour combination and (valuable) registration number, yet had sufficient attention over the years to present and run exactly as you would hope. If you are seeking a MKII, then ignore this one at your peril.

In summary:

  • A very original matching numbers example
  • Boasts arguably the perfect MKII specification
  • Just five owners from new, including two from the same family
