The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 46

1986 Jaguar XJ-S Coupe 3.6
Only 46,000 miles, backed up by history file

Registration - D467 ENH

Chassis No. - SAJJNAEC7CC134019

M.O.T. - May 2023

Odometer - 46,938

Some types of car age better than others and the XJ-S/XJS, whose design was somewhat controversial at birth, is seen in an increasingly new light 40 odd years down the line. Finished in an eye-catching shade of metallic red and trimmed in beige half leather/cloth, ‘D467 ENH’ is certainly pleasing on the eye. We understand that the relatively modest indicated mileage of 46,938 is backed up by the service and MOT records, and that the car has recently benefited from replacement front and rear brakes, dampers and tyres, and that the lattice pattern alloy wheels have been freshly powder coated. The vendor informs us that ‘the engine and gearbox work perfectly and the car drives wonderfully’. In summary, he presently grades the 3.6-litre straight-six engine, Getrag five-speed manual transmission and upholstery as ‘excellent’, and the coupe bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’. He is now offering this attractive six-owner Jaguar complete with bonnet ‘leaper’, two sets of keys, fully-stamped service book, owner’s book pack, original bill of sale and collection of receipts, plus a selection of old MOTs and a current certificate valid into May of next year.

Launched in September 1975, the XJ-S (later XJS) was designed by Malcolm Sayer with input from Sir William Lyons. Though effectively a replacement for the legendary E-Type, it was a cat of very different character – a luxurious, high-speed grand tourer rather than a race-bred sports car. Based on the XJ saloon, it was a two-door monocoque equipped with all-round independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and rack and pinion steering. The model was initially only available with Jaguar’s 5.3-litre V12 engine, the 3.6-litre straight-six version coming on song in 1983.

In summary:

  • An attractive manual gearbox example with full-service history
  • Just 64,840 miles and six owners from new
  • Accompanied by a full service history and long MOT
