Presented in striking polished aluminium with red nose and scuttle and contrasting green cycle wings, this unique MEK SS2 was hand-built by skilled engineer Mick Keeley as a personal homage to the original Lotus Seven Series 1. Constructed entirely from scratch, the SS2 features Keeley’s own spaceframe chassis and hand-formed aluminium bodywork, combining lightweight simplicity with meticulous attention to detail.
Unlike many kit-based Sevens, this example was conceived as a one-off creation and was subsequently the subject of a two-part feature in Complete Kit Car magazine (June and July 2014), in which Keeley documented the entire build process from bare frame to finished car. The result is a beautifully proportioned, minimalist sports car that perfectly captures the ethos of the early post-war British special.
Power comes from a Ford Kent Crossflow engine equipped with twin Weber DCOE carburettors and tubular exhaust headers, mated to a Ford Type 9 five-speed gearbox and Escort Mk2 rear axle. The car sits on period-style steel wheels and weighs little more than 550kg, delivering an unfiltered and exhilarating driving experience true to its Lotus-inspired roots. Inside, the cockpit is trimmed in red vinyl with simple instruments and a purposeful aesthetic.
Having passed its IVA test in 2013 and registered under the Q140 BDA plate, this car is accompanied by a comprehensive history file including build documentation, IVA paperwork, photographs, and the original Complete Kit Car magazines featuring the SS2’s construction.
A remarkable example of British craftsmanship and ingenuity, the MEK SS2 represents a rare opportunity to acquire a one-off, magazine-featured special with impeccable provenance.
