February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 47

1954 Bristol 404
Ex Peter Wyngarde (Jason King)

Registration - SRU 849

Chassis No. - 404/2018

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 18,708

This stunning motorcar, one of just 52 Bristol 404s made, has been the subject of a full body-off restoration by Chris Eva of Evaluation Classic & Motorsport Fabrication. The project included: a bare metal respray in the original colour of Heather Grey; full retrim featuring mulberry-coloured leather upholstery, West of England wool headlining and quality carpets; the creation of a new walnut veneer dashboard by former Rolls-Royce employees; rechroming of all bright parts; a complete engine rebuild by Pride Engines of Hartlebury; the manufacture of a fresh aluminium fuel tank; and the installation of a new stainless steel exhaust system, wiring loom, headlights, rear lights, dampers, Michelin X tyres and badges. Once back together, the Bristol was treated to a £4,000-plus checkover by Trevor Farrington Ltd of Knutsford, whose work included overhauling the braking system, tuning the engine, fixing any faults and providing an MOT. Unsurprisingly, the vendor presently considers the Bristol engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ condition.

According to Experian Autocheck, ‘SRU 849’ has spent part of its life outside the UK. More interestingly, it has at some time been the property of actor Peter Wyngarde, arguably best known for the part of ostentatious TV sleuth Jason King. This exquisite and rare 404 is now available for sale complete with correct driver’s handbook, toolkit, jack, wheelbrace and original Bristol workshop manual. Also included in the Lot are the re-plated bumpers (not currently fitted) and a new number plate.

Having made a major contribution to both world wars, the Bristol Aeroplane Company ended 1945 with a surplus of skilled labour and, to redeploy this resource, created a luxury car division. Under the war reparation scheme, rights were acquired regarding pre-war BMWs and their powerplants. The company was therefore able to produce its first vehicle - the 400 saloon - in the autumn of 1946. The later two-door 404 was a short wheelbase sports model manufactured between 1953 and 1955

In summary:

  • A rare and desirable British classic in stunning condition
  • The subject of a comprehensive body-off restoration
  • Once the property of actor Peter Wyngarde
