Lot 47

1959 Peerless GT

Registration - 647 GBH

Chassis No. - GT2/00111

M.O.T. - March 2022

Odometer - 93,849

The original green log book for ‘647 GBH’ shows it to have had three owners in the first three years, the first of whom was Leslie Helier Cody, the grandson of Col. Samuel Franklin Cody, whose statue stands outside the gates of the former Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. Next followed Henry Watson, Henry Day and Joyce Marjorie Holmes Shead before the Peerless was acquired by John Knott, a Kent farmer in the early ‘80s, who placed it in storage. By the time former Peerless registrar Alan House rescued it in 2003, its 20-plus years of inactivity had taken their toll, and he resorted to a body-off chassis restoration, that was completed sometime during 2014. Originality was key to him, so the car is essentially as-made except for the addition of a Kenlowe cooling fan and side engine-bay vents for improved cooling, and a change from grey to yellow (a Peerless option) for the body colour. The current keeper displayed the GT at a Goodwood Breakfast Club meeting last year and has since had the car serviced and generally overhauled by professional engineers – it now has an advisory-free MOT that’s valid until March 26 next year. Apparently the odometer ceased to function over the last year, but it is gauged that only 500-600 miles need be added to the total of 93,849 currently displayed.

Taking its name from the countless American Peerless trucks repaired on the same site in WWII, the Slough-made Peerless GT sported TR3 running gear clothed in a fibreglass body. Some 325 examples were produced between 1957 and 1960, one of which finished 16th at Le Mans in 1958.

In summary:

  • Body-off chassis restoration completed in 2014
  • Currently regarded by the vendor as ‘not concours, but very good’
  • A rare example of relatively little-known marque
