The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 47

1966 Ford Cortina MK1 GT Convertible
***NO RESERVE*** Professional adaptation, in the style of Crayford Engineering

Registration - GOP 186D

Chassis No. - BA77FV32865

M.O.T. - August 2018

Odometer - 94,292

And now for something rather different, and rare – a professionally created convertible MKI Cortina GT. Crayford of Westerham produced around 50 such cars in period, but the lack of rear quarter windows suggests ‘GOP 186D’ was converted by another company. Either way, it presents very well, having been the subject of an older restoration. Its Seafoam paintwork is complemented by black vinyl trim and a black hood. The Cortina retains it original Ford stereo unit and benefits from the addition of an aftermarket woodrim steering wheel. The vendor has owned the GT for some 11 years, so knows it well and presently has no hesitation in regarding the 1500cc Kent engine, four-speed manual gearbox, converted bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ condition. The Ford is now offered for sale complete with photos of the restoration. The odometer current registers 94,292 miles.

With few Cortinas still in everyday use, it’s hard to believe that the model was by far the Britain’s best-selling car throughout the 1970s – available in two and four-door saloon or estate versions, the model dominated our roads. Five generations were produced between 1962 and 1982, each of which notched up over a million sales. At introduction the car was powered by an 1193cc three-bearing version of the four-cylinder, OHV ‘Kent’ engine, though the option of a five-bearing 1500cc unit followed within months. Initially the mechanical specification echoed that of the Anglia with four-speed manual gearbox, drum brakes all-round, MacPherson strut front suspension, live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear, and recirculating ball steering. The GT was a halfway house between the standard 1500cc models and the twin-cam-engined Cortina Lotus. Something of a wolf in sheep’s clothing, its tuned engine complete with twin-choke Weber carburettor gave about 30 percent more power. It also sported lower, stiffer suspension and disc brakes in place of drums at the front. Though the Lotus became one of Ford’s all-time great competition cars, the GT was no mean performer and examples notched up memorable wins on the track and in the forest.

In summary:

  • A rare convertible version of the ever-popular MKI Cortina GT
  • Presents well, having been the subject of an earlier restoration
  • Being sold at No Reserve
