The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 47

1970 Morris Minor Traveller
** NO RESERVE **

Registration - JFM 397J

Chassis No. - MAW51286322

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 8,652

This much treasured Traveller has had just six keepers from new, the most recent of whom acquired the Morris in 2019, since when it has ‘always been garaged and well maintained’. He is a proud member of the Morris Minor Owners Club and has displayed the car at various shows during his four-year tenure. It is a well-presented example and it comes as no surprise to learn that it was treated to a fair degree of restoration in 2001, during which the Minor was stripped and repainted in the current shade of blue, the woodwork completely replaced, the blue interior trim refurbished, seat belts installed in the rear, and the A Series engine optimised for the use of unleaded fuel. ‘JFM 397J’ has recently been the recipient of a new battery and the vendor now considers its 1098cc powerplant, four-speed manual gearbox, estate car bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘good’ condition. We assume the current indicated mileage of 8,652 is the distance travelled since the restoration, and can confirm that the Traveller comes complete with a modest history file.

Designed by Alec Issigonis, the Morris Minor was unveiled at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show. With the Series II of 1952 came a new, Austin-designed engine – the ‘A Series’ 803cc OHV unit. The more major update of 1956 saw the engine increased in capacity to 948cc (the car was now renamed the Minor 1000), the rear window of the saloon enlarged and the split-screen front one replaced with a single glass. The final iteration appeared in 1962 and featured a further increase in engine capacity to 1098cc. The practical Traveller versions were assembled at the MG plant in Abingdon from front halves built at Cowley and the timber-framed rear sections fashioned in Coventry. Total production of the variant was just over 180,000.

In summary:

  • A very well-presented, original-looking example
  • Treated to a considerable level of restoration in 2001
  • Much treasured by the vendor - ‘always garaged and well maintained’
