Offered at No Reserve, this 1978 Austin Allegro 1300 Super is a familiar face on the show car scene. Described as a lovely example of an Austin Allegro from this time period, it is highly original and has been well cared for. Importantly, it is described as being in ‘good’ condition throughout, and the vendor reports that it is “free from any corrosion on the bodywork”. The four-door saloon body is resplendent in period orange with plenty of sparkling chrome trim, plus extras such as driving lamps below the front bumper and dual reversing lights at the rear.
‘TJB672S’ has a tan interior that, like the exterior, is in ‘good’ condition. The odometer reads around 93,500 miles. Registered on 1 January 1978 – a great New Year’s Day treat for the original owner – ‘TJB672S’ has had just 12 previous keepers, well below the average for a 48-year-old, MOT- and tax-exempt classic. The vendor notes it is mechanically in good condition, with the 1275cc A-Series engine “starting up on the button every time”.
The Austin Allegro had the unenviable task of replacing the legendary Austin 1100 and 1300, a star car series of the 1960s. Launched in 1973, the rounded design didn’t quite live up to the wedge-shaped concept its designer Harris Mann intended, due to compromises such as having to use a tall engine and bulky heater system. Its ‘square’ steering wheel also gained column inches at launch. With production of around 640,000 in a 10-year period, sales were less than a third of those boasted by the 1100 and 1300 in an 11-year period, but history today is kinder to the Allegro – which is becoming a real rarity as a collectable slice of 1970s British automotive history. Good-condition cars are now particularly sought after.
