  Lot 48

1970 Austin 6 CWT Van

Registration - NNK 159H

Chassis No. - AAVC276032

M.O.T. - April 2024

Odometer - 7,500

The enduring charm of the 6 CWT Austin and Morris panel vans produced in one form or another by BMC over no less than 18 years leaves many of us searching for an excuse to own one. And in fact there are reasons aplenty, as good ones are reliable, cheap to run and eminently practical. The example on offer was first registered in January 1970 to Bushey Vale Garages of Watford. By February 2018 it had worked its way through 15 keepers and was owned by a company called Blandorum Ltd of Helensburgh, Scotland. They purchased it from West Riding Classic Cars of Halifax, and it was the same dealer who facilitated its sale to the vendor in November 2018. It was during the same year that ‘NNK 159K’ was the subject of a comprehensive refurbishment and the vehicle is accompanied by bills for ‘every related nut and bolt’. In addition to attention to the body and paintwork, the van was undersealed, its seats recovered, and carpet added to the loading bay. The front brakes were converted to discs the following year and the vendor now classes the bodywork, British Racing Green and cream paintwork and black vinyl upholstery as ‘excellent’, and the venerable 1098cc A Series engine and four-speed manual gearbox as ‘good’. The van is now available for sale complete with tow bar, handbooks, and an extensive history file that includes a current MOT valid into April 2024.

In common with the related pickup, a van derivative of the ubiquitous Morris Minor was available from 1953 to the end of Minor production in 1971. Austin-badged versions were introduced following the termination of the Austin A35 range in 1968. Though unmistakably related to their saloon and Traveller siblings, the commercial variants featured separate chassis rather than monocoque bodyshells. Other distinguishing features included telescopic rear dampers, stiffer leaves for the rear springs and a lower final drive ratio.

In summary:

  • The subject of a comprehensive restoration in 2018
  • Treated to a disc brake conversion in 2019
  • Comes complete with extensive history and MOT valid into April
