1972 Ford Capri MK 1
Works touring car evocation, powered by a JE-prepared 4.2-litre Rover V8 unit

Odometer - 8,200

Those of a certain age will recall the spectacular racing Capris that ultimately led to Ford’s victory over BMW in the 1974 European Touring Car Championship. Those unforgettable machines were the inspiration for this well-known fast Ford that prompted a six-page cover story in Classic Ford magazine as long ago as April 2000. It was built by Ford fanatic Russell Slatcher and, believe it or not, started life as an unsuspecting and rather moth-eaten Daytona Yellow 1600 GT XLR. The shell was duly stripped and repaired and treated to a set of Fibresports Cologne-style wheels arches and a suitably large ducktail rear spoiler, and the whole ensemble finished in the blue and white livery reminiscent of the works Fords of the period. The suspension was much modified with Polybushes and Rose-joints where appropriate. The front features Bilstein struts, while the rear end is equipped with single leaf Ford Motorsport springs, uprated anti-tramp bars, a Panhard Rod and limited slip differential. Braking is by four-pot grooved/vented discs up front and 2.8i drums on the rear. Power comes from a JE-prepared 4.2-litre Rover V8 unit, complete with lightened and balanced bottom end, ported and gas flowed cylinder heads, larger valves and a high lift camshaft, all topped off by a Hotwire fuel injection system and a remapped ECU. The much-uprated engine drives through a five-speed manual Rover SD1 gearbox and to the road via a set of chunky Revolution RFX alloy wheels shod with Toyo Proxes tyres. Front seat occupants are secured in high-back Cobra bucket seats courtesy of Sabelt harnesses, and protected from harm courtesy of a full roll cage. Other interior tweaks include an array of auxiliary instruments, a competition-style ignition cut-off, OMP alloy pedals and a Springalex deep-dished steering wheel.

This unique Capri has apparently covered just 8,200 miles since the conclusion of the rebuild all those years ago, and is now offered for sale complete with a copy of the aforementioned magazine article. We understand the Ford will also be accompanied to the sale by a fresh MOT certificate.

In summary:

  • A unique tribute to the Works Capris of the ‘70s
  • Powered by a JE-tuned 4.2-litre Rover V8 engine
  • The subject of a six-page feature in Classic Ford magazine
