May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 48

Lot 48 - 1980 MGB GT

1980 MGB GT

Registration - VLG 420W

Chassis No. - GVGEJ1AG517039

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 82,400

‘VLG 420W’ is one of the last GTs to be manufactured before MGB production ceased and the famous Abingdon factory closed for good. Finished in black and trimmed in black/grey cloth, it rides on period correct Rostyle wheels and benefits from a full-length sunroof. A seven-owner example, it was purchased by the current enthusiast keeper a year ago from a deceased estate, since when it has been treated to a degree of restoration, during which the engine and braking system have been refurbished and many parts replaced, including: the alternator, fuel pump and all wheels and tyres. The vendor now grades the overdrive gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’ and the venerable B Series engine as ‘average’, and summarises by saying the MG ‘now runs very nicely and is ready to go’.

Introduced in the May of 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings, reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. Initially, the B was only available in roadster form – the Pininfarina-penned hatchback GT derivative with 2+2 seating not being offered until October 1965. With the MKIII version of 1972 came a new facia and improved heater. However, the biggest visual change in the car’s history occurred two years later, when steel reinforced plastic bumpers replaced the chrome ones and the ride height was raised by one inch. These evolutions were demanded by the American market, which had accounted for much of the car’s production from day one. By the time GT production ceased in late 1980, a total of 125,282 are said to have been produced.

In summary:

  • A smartly-presented GT – one of the last of the line
  • Has benefited from a level of recent refurbishment
  • Specification includes sunroof and overdrive gearbox
