The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 49

1980 Ford Capri 1.6 GT4
A former cover star of Classic Ford magazine’s ‘Rare Beasts’ issue, with a noticeably modest recorded mileage

Registration - NAH 881V

Chasis No - GAECAA060210

M.O.T. - August 2024

Odometer - 23,757

Have you seen one of these before? We haven’t. It’s one of just 500 Ford Capri GT4s sold in the UK, of which only a handful remain, and is made even rarer by its Signal Red paintwork, the least specified colour for this already uncommon model. After languishing in a barn for more than 20 years, the car was restored under the watchful eye of its enthusiast owner, retaining as many original parts as possible. The task was completed in 2022, and earlier this year ‘NAH 881V’ became a cover star of Classic Ford magazine’s ‘Rare Beasts’ issue, with editor Simon Wolley commenting that even he had previously only seen a GT4 in photographs. The car then became one of the Top 50 exhibits at the Classic Ford Show. Its paintwork is complemented by GT4-specific striping on the bonnet and flanks and Bitter Chocolate-coloured fabric trim. This fascinating Ford’s original specification includes the optional twin-venturi carburettor (£59.10) and pop-up glass sunroof, push-button radio, head restraints, remote control driver’s door mirror and tailgate wash-wipe. The vendor describes the very smartly-presented Capri’s 1.6-litre Pinto engine, four-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ condition. The odometer currently indicates a notably modest 23,876 miles and the car comes complete spare wheel, history file and an MOT valid until August 9, 2024.

Based on the MK3 Capri 1.6 L and launched in 1980, the GT4 was the work of Ford’s Special Projects team, who, in the words of the company’s promotional literature, ‘aimed to promote it to a class of its own’! The distinctive paintwork with three-tone red striping set it apart from the crowd, as did the wider, all-silver road wheels, red-edged six-clock instrument pack and sports gear knob. Firmer suspension provided flatter cornering, making driving – in Ford’s words – ‘an exact science’. Almost 1.9 million Capris were produced between 1968 and 1986 - just 1,500 were GT4s, only one third of which were allocated to the UK market.

In summary:

  • An exceptionally rare example of Ford’s limited-edition Capri GT4
  • One of only a handful of examples remaining from the UK allocation
  • The subject of a recent restoration following 20 years in a barn
