As with many other members of the fast Ford clan, demand for Escort RS Turbos seems to be increasing rather than waning, and good examples are keenly sought by a knowledgeable group of enthusiasts. The matching numbers example on offer is one of the rare B registration models. ‘B702 MTJ’ has been in the vendor’s care since last November, prior to which it had belonged to a friend of his for no less than 18 years, the last 14 of which were spent dry stored in a Carcoon. Since emerging from its slumbers, it has been treated to replacement floor pans and driver’s side inner wing. The Ford has also been treated to a full underseal by Paul’s Classic Car Restoration of Mansfield, plus: the replacement of the cam belt and water pump; an oil and filter service; renewal of the brake fluid; and a full refurbishment of the Firestone-shod seven-spoke RS alloy wheels. The vendor now regards the Escort’s five-speed manual transmission, bodywork and white paintwork as ‘excellent’ and the turbo engine and grey cloth upholstery as ‘good’. It is now being offered complete with full Scorpion stainless steel exhaust, Koni suspension, Samco engine hoses, strut brace, factory-fitted sunroof, boost gauge, Pioneer sound system, a large folder of receipts for service and maintenance, and every MOT certificate dating back to 1993, plus a current certificate valid into February next year.

Debuted in October 1984, the MK3 Escort-based Series 1 RS Turbo went on sale the following spring. The initial plan was to build the 5,000 required for Group A homologation. However, following better than expected demand, a total of 8,604 were eventually created, 5,000 of which were reserved for the UK market. Power for the model came courtesy of a 1597cc version of the company’s CVH engine, force fed by a Garrett AiResearch T3 turbocharger. The resulting peak output was 132bhp at 6,000rpm – sufficient to achieve the 0-60mph sprint in 7.8 seconds and 128mph flat out.

In summary:

  • A well-presented B registration Series 1 model
  • Displaying 81,657 total miles; in previous ownership for 18 years
  • Comes fully serviced and complete with history file and current MOT
