May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 49

1987 Ford Capri 2.8i

Registration - D94 FBF

Chassis No. - WF0CXXGAECGA91542

M.O.T. - February 2023

Odometer - 64,286

This apparently immaculate example of the final iteration of Ford’s ever-popular Capri matches black bodywork to grey half-leather interior trim. The car was apparently the subject of a restoration by the previous owner, which included a full bare metal respray. According to Experian Autocheck, it has only had four owners from new and amassed a very credible total mileage of 64,286. The vendor’s current opinion of his fast Ford is that its V6 engine, five-speed manual gearbox, coupe bodywork and paintwork are all ‘excellent’, while he views the upholstery as ‘good’ (there is some minor wear on the driver’s offside seat bolster). He is now selling ‘D94 FBF’ complete with factory-fitted sunroof, original Ford sound system and Recaro seats, lots of invoices and an article from the Capri Club magazine detailing the car’s history, plus a current MOT valid all the way to February 14 next year. An appealing proposition.

Popular in the ‘70s and ‘80s, Europe’s answer to the Mustang is hot property once again, and for many enthusiasts the pick of the Capri bunch is the last of the line – the model came with the MKII variants of 1974 and the quadruple headlamp MKIII cars of 1978. Then in 1981 the venerable 3-litre Essex-engined versions were dropped in favour of the so-called 2.8i – a single-car range powered by the lusty fuel-injected 2.8-litre Cologne V6 engine. Power rose to 160bhp and, soon after launch, the old four-speed gearbox was replaced with a contemporary five-speed unit. Ford now had a stylish four-seat coupe with the performance to shame rivals of four times the price.

In summary:

  • An apparently immaculate four-owner example
  • The subject of a restoration by the previous keeper
  • Comes with lots of invoices and an article from the Capri Club magazine
