Southern GT have built a fearsome reputation in the evocation car market by producing the highest quality GT40 kits and parts available today. ‘OU69 DXH’ doubles down on that reputation by having been fastidiously built from a complete kit over 10 years with over 5,000 hours expended. This culminated in ‘OU69 DXH’ gaining its Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) in 2019 and being allocated this year specific registration number. Whilst based on the iconic MKI GT40, ‘OU69 DXH’ features MKII rear bodywork. ‘OU69 DXH’s’ tubular spaceframe and aluminium panelled body is propelled by a 302 cu. in. V8 stroked to 347 cu.in. (5.7-litres) built by Gurney Weslake and producing over 400 bhp. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a Quaife five speed transaxle with an upgraded ATB (500 bhp) differential. This superlative car comes with a valid, advisory free MOT until June 2025. Given the quality and specification of ‘OU69 DXH’ it could legitimately be considered less of an evocation and more a highly individual road / race car in its own right.
‘OU69 DXH’s’ low, sleek body comprises of around 70 aluminium panels affixed to a tubular spaceframe skeleton, complete with an integrated roll cage. The panels are finished in Ford Performance Blue and encompass some superb GT40 details. First there are the signature doors that constitute part of the roof and include in built “helmet humps.” Correct bulleted fuel caps with lock internals are also fitted as are period correct “bullet” wing mirrors. Modern enhancements include LED rear lights and an external electric master kill switch. ‘OU69 DXH’ squats purposefully on the correct ‘BRM’ 15-inch magnesium alloy wheels – 8J at the front and 10J rears. These are centrally mounted via triple eared knock on spinners.
‘OU69 DXH’s’ focused cabin manages to blend an authentic 1960’s race car aesthetic with a raft of invaluable modern conveniences and enhancements. The period faithful, low slung black leather bucket seats immediately grab the eye. These are perforated with six rows of alloy eyelets. Red Luke five point, 2-inch racing harnesses are fitted. An adjustable peddle box features, together with brake bias adjustment. The wide dashboard is flocked to reduce glare, and this provides a home to a set of Autometer “pro comp” gauges including a 6-inch tachometer and 200 mph speedometer. A race GPS data logger is also fitted and period accurate Lucas style toggle switches abound. There are a number of subtle, modern enhancements also included here. A heating and air-conditioning system are present, as is a heated windscreen, engine immobiliser, keyless ignition and starter button. A Lifeline hard plumbed fire extinguishing system is present with cockpit and engine bay jets.
Needless to say, ‘OU69 DXH’s’ mechanical specification is no less awe-inspiring. The Gurney Weslake built V8 features a balanced crankshaft, KB performance pistons with steel conrods, and full ported and polished aluminium ARP heads housing a COMP Cam’s extreme race camshaft. Also noteworthy is an ARP head stud conversion with hydraulic rollers and COMP Cam valve strings. Edelbrock rocker covers are fitted together with four barrel Holley carburettor, MSD digital distributor, AP lightweight flywheel and AP racing clutch. In terms of ancillaries, a custom alloy radiator with high flow core is fitted, as is a “bundle of snakes” tubular exhaust system with ceramic coating. Underneath ‘OU69 DXH’ lurks a rose jointed race suspension, with machined uprights and adjustable antiroll bars. These work together with Ohlins adjustable height coil overs with three way adjustable dampers. Braking is courtesy of AP Racing four callipers front and rear, acting upon AP Racing grooved and vented disks on machined hubs.
Given the attention to detail and fastidiousness of this unique build, it may come as no surprise that the vendor rates all aspects of ‘OU69 DXH’ as “excellent.”
