March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 5

1964 Jaguar MKII 3.4
Upgraded to 3.8 Litre

Registration - HAX 40C

Chassis No. - 168837BW

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 68,153

‘HAX 40C’ has formed part of a private collection for the last four years, but is now being offered for sale due to lack of use. The vendor informs us that the Jaguar has been the subject of a full restoration that was completed around five years ago, since when it has covered a mere 500 miles or so. The work included the renewal of the brake, suspension and steering systems, a complete respray in Graphite Grey (the MKII’s original colour was red) and the installation of a brand new dark blue leather interior. Originally equipped with the optional 3.4-litre engine, the car is now powered by one of the more powerful 3.8-litre units that was favoured by the bank robbers of the period and the police that pursued them. The vendor describes the bodywork as ‘very solid’ and currently classes it, the straight-six DOHC engine, overdrive transmission and paintwork as ‘good’ and the aforementioned upholstery as ‘excellent’. He is now offering this smartly-presented seven-keeper Jaguar complete with painted wire wheels shod with recent Federal tyres, period style sports wing mirrors, Pye push-button radio, and ‘leaper’ bonnet mascot. The odometer currently stands at a credible though unwarranted 68,153 miles.

Synonymous with the swinging ‘60s, the MKII featured notably slimmer roof pillars than its MKI forebear, and was as airy on the inside as it was elegant on the outside. Its monocoque bodyshell was equipped with independent coil-sprung front suspension, a well located live rear axle and 12-inch disc brakes all-round. The model could be specified with a 2.4, 3.4 or 3.8-litre version of Jaguar’s race-proved, inline, six-cylinder XK engine. The interior was quintessentially British with its sumptuous leather-covered seats, polished wood facia and door cappings, comprehensive instrumentation and impressive row of auxiliary toggle switches. The attention to detail and build quality were remarkable for the price (just £1,779 0s 10d including taxes even for the 3.8) – these cars punched above their weight.

In summary:

  • A 3.4-litre example that now benefits from 3.8-litre power
  • The subject of a full restoration completed five years ago
  • Just 500 miles covered since the rebuild
