November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 5

1976 Vauxhall Viva E
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - NEX 361P

Chassis No. - 9C69DFX113142

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 57,374

In common with the other ‘70s models of car that once dominated our UK roads, the Viva is now a rare sight, so this smart four-door HC example certainly catches the eye. Its white bodywork is matched to an interior of blue vinyl upholstery and matching carpets, the overall effect of which is enhanced by the wide-rim Minilite-style wheels on which the car now rides. ‘NEX 361P’ has most recently formed part of a substantial private collection, the owner of which considers the Vauxhall’s 1256cc engine, manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and interior trim to all be in ‘good’ condition. He is now offering the car complete with Panasonic radio/CD player, original service book, handbook and file containing a selection of old invoices and MOTs. The Viva has had just five keepers to date and currently displays a total of 57,374 miles from new.

The Viva was Vauxhall’s small car offering from 1963 all the way through to 1979, during which no less than 1,516,792 examples were produced. There were three generations of the model, logically dubbed HA (1963-1966, HB (1966-1970) and HC (1970-1979). The latter was mechanically the same as the HB but graced with more contemporary styling and added interior space. There were three body styles, namely two and four-door saloon and a fastback estate. The powerplants ranged from 1159cc OHV engine to the company’s innovative OHC 2279cc slant-four unit, derivatives of which also powered various Lotus models. The HC in particular caught the public mood of the period and became the company’s fastest selling new model of all time, chalking up 100,000 cars in the first 7.5 months alone, and 640,863 all told.

In summary:

  • A smartly-presented example riding on Minilite-style wheels
  • Just five keepers and an indicated 57,374 miles from new
  • Appears to have been rust-proofed by Ziebart from new
