The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 50

1937 Morris Eight
Fully restored over a decade and subsequently dry-stored

Registration - APN 76

Chassis No - S1/E142112

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 60,269

‘APN 76’ has been fully restored over a period of 10 years. Apparently the task was completed during lockdown, since when this lovely little Morris has slumbered peacefully in a heated motor house. The shiny black over green paintwork is therefore brand new, the rebuilt engine not even run in, and the replaced carpets and door cards largely untouched. The vendor currently grades the four-cylinder engine, two-door bodywork, and paintwork as ‘excellent’, and the gearbox and nicely-patinated green leather upholstery as ‘good’. This charming pre-war saloon is now being offered complete with sunroof, luggage rack, spare wheel and tyre and workshop manual, plus a large file of invoices, receipts and photos of the restoration work. We understand the registration number is not transferable.

Inspired by the popularity of Ford’s Model Y family saloon, Morris replaced its long-running Minor with the so-called Eight in 1935. It was far better equipped than most of its competitors and boasted a full set of instruments, electric wipers (the model Y relied on an old-fashioned vacuum system), synchromesh on its upper two gearbox ratios and, most significantly, hydraulically-operated Lockheed brakes that were vastly superior to the antiquated cable system of Austin’s ubiquitous Seven model. The newcomer was powered by a 918cc straight-four, side-valve engine of 23.5bhp, which drove through a three-speed manual gearbox. The eight was ultimately offered in no less than five guises – ie two and four-door saloon, cabriolet, tourer and van, prices for which ranged from £118 to £142 - there was also the option of a bare chassis for £95. A total of 164,102 Series Is had been produced by the time it was replaced by the only mildly restyled Series II version in 1938.

In summary:

  • Fully restored over a 10-year period and stored since lockdown
  • Equipped with sunroof, luggage rack and spare wheel/tyre
  • Comes complete with large history file and photos of the restoration
