Lot 50

1972 MGB Roadster

Registration - NTE 188K

Chassis No. - GHN5275112G

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 7,458

This venerable ‘rust free’ chrome-bumpered roadster has apparently benefited from a complete body respray at some stage, as well as the recent replacement of its wiring, starter motor, alternator, distributor, chrome wire wheels, hood and hood frame. The vendor presently regards the bodywork, white paintwork, 1798cc B Series engine and overdrive manual gearbox as all being in ‘excellent’ order, and the white-piped black interior trim as ‘good’. He further volunteers that the tyres are ‘good’ and the brightwork ‘fair’, but that there are apparently a couple of slight scratches to the windscreen. The total mileage is not declared, but 7,458 miles have apparently been recorded since the fitment of a replacement speedometer. This home market MG is now being offered complete with an aftermarket leather-rimmed steering wheel, spare bumpers, photos of the respray and receipts for all the work carried out during the current ownership. Interest in Britain’s favourite classic sport car shows no sign of waning, and it’s hard to imagine ‘NTE 188K’ not finding a happy new home.

Introduced in May 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings, reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. Initially, the model was only available in Roadster form – the hatchback GT derivative not being offered until 1965. The MKII roadster of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with revised ratios and synchromesh on all gears, as well as the option of a Borg Warner automatic unit. Other changes included a revised rear axle and a switch from dynamos to alternators. With the MKIII derivative of 1972 came a new facia and improved heater.

In summary:

  • Has benefited from a respray and a number of replacement parts
  • Desirable overdrive gearbox
  • Comes with spare bumpers
