September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 50

1972 YB Turbo-powered Escort
Cosworth YB Turbo Powered

Registration - JAC129L

Chassis No. - TBC

M.O.T. - TBC

Odometer - TBC

‘JAC 129L’ started life as a lowly Escort 1100 L, but has subsequently undergone a dramatic change of character. Though prepared for rallying, the Ford has apparently yet to be used in anger, so that pleasure will fall to the next owner. The ‘nice, solid’ shell has been strengthened, equipped with roll cage, bubble arches and been undersealed/stone guarded below for optimum protection. The Escort rides on a set of Minilite-style wheels and boasts a quartet of auxiliary spot lights up front. The workmanlike interior features new Cobra bucket seats and harnesses, good quality door cards, internal fuel lines, RS steering wheel, a ‘proper’ switch panel and instruments, and quick-release bonnet catches. The key mechanical uprates include a Cosworth YB turbo engine (the output of which is said to be c.355bhp) and limited slip differential, plus suitably uprated brakes and suspension. The vendor sadly lacks the time to use the car, but says it’s ‘a lovely example that drives well and sounds good, and is the fastest Escort I’ve ever driven’. He’s now offering it for somebody else to enjoy, complete with ‘massive’ build folder.

Competition versions of the MKI Escort were international winners in their day, and examples are now a force to be reckoned with in classic rallying and racing events. Genuine AVO and Boreham-built cars are increasingly hard to come by, and expensive when they do come to market, so it makes eminent good sense for enthusiasts to create their own weapons of choice, which is exactly how the sale car was turned from a cooking saloon into a serious rally car.

'A Buyer’s Premium applies to the Hammer Price of this Lot if your bid is successful, as per the following;  Motor Cars 12.5% + VAT (minimum £150 + VAT), Motorcycles and Bicycles 15% + VAT (minimum £100 + VAT); Registration Numbers 15% + VAT (minimum £50 + VAT); Automobilia 15% + VAT (minimum of £5 + VAT).'

Potential buyers should satisfy themselves with the description and condition of each lot prior to sale. Each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ as per the terms and conditions for the auction, buyers are asked to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out the service. Any disputes over descriptions will not be entertained.

Estimated at £25,000 - £30,000
