November 2021 Classics Auction
1932 Alvis 12/60 Sportsman Saloon
The Book "The Vintage Alvis by Peter Hull and Norman Johnson" featured this very car.

This charmingly original Cross & Ellis-bodied Alvis saloon features on page 344 of the respected marque tome The Vintage Alvis by Peter Hull and Norman Johnson. It has apparently had some 14 keepers in what is fast nearing 90 years, one of whom retained the Sportsman for no less than 21 years. The motorcar was evidently treated to a major overhaul in 1988, and in recent times has benefited from a new radiator, water pump and tyres, while the 1645cc four-cylinder engine has been upgraded courtesy of an alternator and spin-off oil filter. Attention has also been paid to the steering and electrical system. The vendor informs us that ‘KF 9355’ is in ‘good order’ and is presented in its original colours of black over green and complete with its original interior of green leather. He adds that the engine exhibits ‘good, even compression and oil pressure’, and views the Alvis as a ‘comfortable vintage tourer that could easily be returned to as-new condition if desired’. Due to ill health, he is now reluctantly offering the car for sale complete with bonnet mascot, wing mirrors and comprehensive history file.
The Coventry-based Alvis Car and Engineering Company Ltd produced motorcars from 1919 until it was acquired by Rover in 1967. Without doubt its golden period was the 1930s, when it became renowned for its continuing mechanical innovation. For example, the 12/75 model of 1928 featured front-wheel drive, in-board braking, an overhead camshaft engine and the option of a Roots-type supercharger. Independent front suspension and the world’s first all-synchromesh gearbox were delivered in 1933. Powered by a 1645cc OHV engine, the 52bhp 12/60 model was capable of some 70mph flat out.
