The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 51

1951 Singer 9 Roadster 4AB
***NO RESERVE*** Restored example of this scarce post-war British four-seater roadster

Registration - LDD 336

Chassis No. - 4AB3922V

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 50,000

This notably fine-looking post-war Singer is one of only c.1000 4AB models built by the company. It was despatched new to the supplying dealer, G. Healey & Son of Gloucester, on October 25, 1951, and issued with the registration ‘LLD 336’ the following month. The Roadster is understood to have been fitted with a larger 10hp OHC engine at some stage, otherwise little is known of its history until it was discovered in a mothballed state in 1986 by the previous owner. He finally managed to purchase the car in 2017 and treated it to a major renovation the following year. The work included: rebuilding the ash frame; stripping and Wax Oyling the chassis; renewing the interior trim, hood, tonneau cover and wiring; and reconditioning the engine. The vendor purchased the almost completed but non-running car from an auction in 2021, and has subsequently refurbished the starter motor, dynamo, distributor and carburettor, and now presents it for sale in full working order. He considers the four-cylinder engine, roadster bodywork, red paintwork and red-piped back vinyl upholstery to now all be in ‘excellent’ condition, and classes the four-speed manual transmission as ‘good’. He adds that the Singer ‘runs and presents well, the only known fault being that the clutch occasionally sticks, though is easily freed’. Though not warranted, the indicated mileage of just 50,050 is believed to be genuine. ‘LDD 336’ comes complete with side screens, wood-rim steering wheel, tow-hook, a pair of auxiliary lights, splendid period bonnet mascot and history file.

The Singer 9 Roadster was a two-door, four-seat convertible version of the Bantam saloon and first sold in 1939. The traditional body comprised alloy panels fixed to a wooden frame. Power came from a version of the 1074cc four-cylinder OHC engine found in the Bantam. The model re-emerged virtually unchanged after the war, and remained so until the 4A variant of 1949. This featured a Solex carburettor in place of the original SU and benefited from a four-speed gearbox. The 4AB model produced between 1950 and 1953 sported a new chassis with independent coil spring front suspension and a mix of rod and hydraulic brakes.

In summary:

  • A fully restored example presented in pristine order throughout
  • The indicated mileage of 50,050 is thought to be genuine
  • One of only c.1000 4AB models made
