May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 51

1955 Daimler Century by Hooper & Co
Believed to be the last remaining example of the three ever built

Registration - PYM 949

Chassis No. - 91927

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 50,221

The vendor of this splendid Daimler informs us that it is the only remaining one of three alloy-bodied cars built by Hooper to design No.8404A. Its graceful dark green coachwork is complemented by Dove Grey leather interior trim and a generous degree of beautifully patinated woodwork, including a pair of sizeable rear compartment picnic tables. There have apparently been nine owners from new and the odometer currently registers an unwarranted by perfectly credible total mileage of 50,221. The vendor presently considers all major aspects of this charming survivor to be in ‘good’ order, and is selling the Daimler complete with period push-button radio, a large selection of paperwork (including the original buff log book that shows the first keeper to have been a Mrs Muriel Shelmerdine), and a collection of MOTs from the 1980s. A truly unique opportunity.

The Conquest first saw the light of day in the spring of 1953. The chassis and running gear were direct developments of those underpinning the Lanchester 14, and included a cruciform chassis suspended by double wishbones and laminated torsion bars at the front, and conventional leaf springs and live axle at the rear. Braking was by Girling hydro/mechanical drums and steering by cam and peg. Power came from a straight-six engine of 2,433cc producing 75bhp and 124 lb ft of torque. From 1954, a more potent version known as the Conquest Century became available. Courtesy of a big-valve alloy cylinder head, twin SU carburettors, higher compression and high-lift camshaft, Daimler managed to hike the output to 100bhp – sufficient to accelerate the Century to 60mph in 16.3 seconds and on to a terminal speed of 90mph.

In summary:

  • The one and only remaining Century built to Hooper design No.8404A
  • An apparently very original specimen complete with preselector gearbox
  • Accompanied by a comprehensive history file
