  Lot 51

1957 Austin A35 Pick-up

Registration - 654 XUH

Chassis No. - AK5LCS21421

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 11,728

How cute is this offering? It is one of just 477 pick-up versions of the A35 that were manufactured between 1956 and 1957. Around 91 are understood to have survived so far, 45 of which can apparently be found in the UK. A good few were exported at birth, especially to Australia and New Zealand while the sale car found its way to South Africa, which is where it was restored to its current condition before being repatriated and first UK registered in February 2008. It has remained in the vendor’s care ever since, who has clearly enjoyed the little Austin, which he’s used for long trips to Devon and even for finishing runner up in the Austin A35 Owner’s Club International Rally one year. ‘654 XUH’ pairs grey bodywork with red leather interior trim, plus a black cover for the load bay and red one for the spare wheel. While looking decidedly original, the pick-up does however benefit from a few worthwhile uprates, including: unleaded cylinder head conversion, A40 front brakes, 4.22:1 axle ratio, and a stainless steel exhaust system. He nowadays considers the 948cc A Series engine, four-speed manual gearbox, pick-up bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ condition. The Austin is now being offered complete with new headlights, Heritage Certificate, and a current MOT certificate valid to May 3 next year.

Introduced in 1956, the A35 saloon was a direct development of the A30, the key differences from which were its 948 rather than 803cc version of the A Series engine and larger rear window. Ultimately there were five derivatives made – two and four-door saloons, an estate, a van and the pick-up as offered here.

In summary:

  • Understood to be one of 477 made and 91 remaining
  • Restored in South Africa and imported to the UK in 2008
  • Has had just the one UK owner and comes with a current MOT
