The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 51

1973 Jaguar E-Type Coupe 5.3 V12

Registration -

Chassis No. - UD1S75075

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 51,495

The vendor has owned this lefthand drive Series 3 E-Type for the last seven years and informs us that it has been dry stored since 1986 – the last time it ventured onto the roads. He sees it as a restoration project, but confirms that it runs and drives and is believed to be 99 percent complete. He currently classes the 5.3-litre engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork and white paintwork as ‘good’, and the French Blue upholstery and electrical system as ‘average’. He volunteers that the brakes definitely require an overhaul, but that the Jaguar is ‘rock solid’. Its odometer currently indicates a very credible and partially authenticated total mileage to date of 51,495. The vendor admits the sale is reluctant but necessary, as he lacks the time to progress the car. An interesting and worthwhile project for some lucky bidder.

The last E-Type Jaguar rolled off the production line in 1975, yet the model still excites enthusiasts of all generations, its Malcolm Sayer–penned lines considered to be among the most striking ever to adorn a motorcar. From birth it was available as a fixed head coupe or two-seat roadster. For 1966, a 2+2 version of the coupe was added to the range that was nine inches longer and featured a more vertical windscreen. The Series 3 cars were introduced in 1971, all but a handful of which were fitted with Jaguar’s new 5.3-litre V12 engine. Production continued until 1975, when the E-Type was superseded by the XJ-S; by which time some 15,000 V12s had been produced. Series 3 E-Types are readily identified by their large cross-slatted radiator grille, flared wheel arches, wide track and V12 badge on the rear.

In summary:

  • Said to be 99 percent complete and both running and driving
  • The indicated mileage of 51,495 is thought to be correct
  • Dry stored since 1986
