The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 52

1988 Austin Mini 1000

Registration - F384 DEY

Chassis No. - SAXXL2S1020395213

M.O.T. - No M.O.T.

Odometer - 80,000

The photos largely tell the story, for this once Plain Jane 998cc Mini has clearly been modified in a number of departments. For example, colour-keyed arches enshroud wide-rim alloy wheels. Also evident at a glance are: LED headlamps, leather bonnet straps, a quick release radiator grille, and high-back seats. The vendor informs us that the car has remained within his family for the last 14 years, during which time it underwent a full restoration and respray from black to white, and any welding that was required was carried out. As a result, he considers the bodyshell to be solid. He does, however, admit that, due to lack of time on his part, the Mini’s exterior no longer looks quite as good as it did following the completion of the rebuild in 2013, and a couple of patches of rust are now visible. The good news on the interior is that the door cards, roof lining and carpets were replaced with new ones as recently as two years ago. He now considers the A Series engine, four-speed manual gearbox and electrical system to be in ‘good’ order, and the bodywork, white paintwork and blue/black interior trim to each be in ‘average’ condition. The car’s total indicated mileage stands at an unwarranted but credible 80,000, courtesy of six keepers.

Over 21 years the remarkable Mini progressed through no less than seven generations. The standard version of the MKIV was powered by a 998cc version of the A series engine that boasted an output of 41bhp which, though modest, was sufficient to propel the little car to 60mph in around 19.7 seconds and on to a terminal speed of some 84mph.

In summary:

  • Restored and repainted in 2013
  • Features a number of upgrades
  • Has remained within the same family for the last 14 years
