  Lot 52

1991 Lotus Elan M100 Turbo SE

Chassis No. - SCC100ZT1MHD16797

Registration - H154 GLP

M.O.T. - December 2021

Odometer – 78,900

Though launched seven years after the death of the Lotus founder, Colin Chapman, the Peter Stevens-designed M100 was true to his abiding philosophy of achieving performance through minimal weight and optimal handling and road holding. As a Turbo SE variant, the Series 1 example on offer is of top specification – it is even equipped with air conditioning. Currently registering a total of 78,900 miles, the Elan had nine keepers prior to being acquired by the vendor from Stocks Sports Cars of Chelmsford 3 years ago. He believes it has been resprayed in the original colour of green at some stage (he currently grades the paintwork as 7/10), which is matched to yellow-striped grey interior trim. Upgrades prior to and during his tenure include the fitment of: PNM Engineering rear brake calipers and modified gearchange cables, stainless steel sports exhaust and modified door seals. He has used the car to attend the 2018 Le Mans Classic as well as tours of Cornwall, Wales and the Lake District, plus the occasional commute come rain or shine. His conclusion as the previous owner of everything from Minis to Rolls-Royces is ‘that the M100 Elan is a very underrated car, and surprisingly quick’. He is nevertheless now offering his apparently very tidy example complete with fully documented service history (19 stamps), bills for over £15,000 and an MOT valid until December 8.

The M100 differs from every other Lotus in being front rather than rear wheel drive. When tested by Autocar, it was described as ‘the quickest point to point car available’, while other critics have claimed it to be ‘the finest front wheel drive car bar none’.

In summary:

  • Optimal specification including air conditioning
  • A tidy example of a relatively rare breed
  • Fully documented history
  • Full service at 77,930 miles
