March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 53

1937 Packard Six

Registration - Not currently registered

Chassis No. - 289968

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This splendid-looking righthand drive saloon was supplied new by the sole UK concessionaire of the day, Leonard Williams & Co of Berkeley Square, London. We know little of its subsequent history, but gather that it is known to the Packard Owners Club. A vehicle of considerable presence, it is finished in black, trimmed in beige/camel-coloured cloth and rides on white-walled tyres. The vendor informs us that the car has recently been treated to new brake cylinders all-round, as well as a new master cylinder, radiator, water pump and set of tyres, and some rechroming of the brightwork. He says the Packard ‘runs beautifully and stops well’ and currently grades the straight-six engine, transmission, bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’ and the paintwork as ‘average’. The Packard comes complete with a modest history file, but we understand the next keeper will need to apply for a new V5C.

Packard was renowned as a manufacturer of premier luxury automobiles that dates back all the way to 1899 and remained in business until 1958. By the late ‘30s the majority of its sales were still of sumptuous eight-cylinder cars to wealthy customers. However, keen to expand and simultaneously take account of the impending recession, in 1937 it reintroduced a six-cylinder model to its range for the first time in nine years. The third such generation, it was in production up until America’s involvement in WWII and for two further years thereafter. Its tall V-shaped radiator grille makes it one of the most recognisable cars of the period.

In summary:

  • A righthand drive example delivered new to the UK concessionaires
  • Recently treated to a number of replacement parts
  • Known to the Packard Owners Club
