May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 53

1953 Austin A40 Sports
A time-warp, unmolested example of the scarce Jensen-bodied A40 roadster

Registration - NSV 274

Chassis No. - GD3745610

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 39,932

Formerly part of a private collection, ‘NSV 274’ is in such apparently fine order inside and out it is hard to credit that the Austin has never been restored. It is finished in a delightful shade of green that’s perfectly complemented by green-piped tan upholstery and tan-coloured hood. The brightwork seems to be in equally fine fettle, and the vendor informs us that the car has ‘been maintained regardless of cost’. He presently considers the OHV engine and column-change four-speed transmission to be in ‘excellent’ order, and classes the aluminium bodywork, paintwork and interior trim as ‘good’. Opinions differ on the number of A40 Sports still in existence, but relatively few are thought to have retained their original 1200cc powerplants, as has this remarkably unmolested example. An imported vehicle, the Austin is understood to have had seven keepers since it came to these shores some years ago. Its odometer currently registers just 39,932 and the car is being sold complete with period pillar-mounted spot light, starting handle and a large history file.

Intended as sporty touring cars rather than out and out performance machines, the A40 Sports were based on the mechanicals of the Austin A40 Devon and clothed in aluminium. They were styled by former Wolseley designer Eric Neale, and manufactured for Austin by Jensen prior to assembly at Austin’s Longbridge plant. They were powered by a twin carburettor version of the A40 engine, and while early versions retained a floor change for the transmission those built after August 1951 featured a column-mounted shift. Production ran from 1950 to 1953, during which time 4,011 examples are understood to have been created.

In summary:

  • A remarkably unmolested example of a rare breed
  • Formerly part of a private collection
  • Understood to have been maintained regardless of cost
