The Bolesworth Castle October 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 53

1990 Peugeot 205 GTI
Rides on refurbished ‘1.9-style’ alloy wheels, all shod with new rubber

Registration - H130 AEC

Chassis No - VF320CB6224079186

M.O.T.- 01/2024

Odometer - 89,957

Examples of Monsieur Peugeot’s GTi have long since been hot property, and their popularity shows no sign of waning. One might assume that enthusiasts would automatically pick the 1.9-litre version over the 1.6, but that’s not necessarily the case, as while the 1.9 is quicker, the 1.6 is considered by many to be the more complete driver’s car. The example offered here is certainly smartly presented. Its white paintwork is complemented by grey half-leather interior trim and the little Pug rides on a set of fully refurbished 1.9 alloys shod with new tyres. The vendor informs us that the car ‘is rot free and runs and drives very well’. In summary he classes the paintwork as ‘excellent’, and the engine, manual gearbox, three-door bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’. He volunteers that there is minor wear to the driver’s seat bolster and it’s sad to report that the car was declared a Category C insurance write-off back in 1999, though it looks none the worse for that today. The Peugeot is now on offer complete with the original set of 1.6 wheels, a history file of receipts and old MOTs, plus a current certificate valid into March 2024. The indicated mileage of 89,957 is understood to be warranted by the paperwork.

Though a much-vaunted manufacturer, even Peugeot has never managed to recreate the magic of the 205 GTi, that was a hit out-of-the box and is universally regarded as one of the greatest hot hatches of all time. Launched in 1984, the rev-happy 1.6-litre version benefited from a revised cylinder head in 1987, that raised the power output from 104 to 115bhp. Visual differences between the three-door GTi and its less-sporting stablemates included meatier front and rear bumper valances, plastic wheelarches covering distinctive wider-rim alloy wheels, and a lower stance that emanated from shorter, stiffer springs. Good examples have long since been sought by collectors everywhere.

In summary:

  • A well-presented 11-keeper, 89,957-mile example
  • Rides on refurbished 1.9 GTi wheels and new tyres
  • Declared a Category C insurance write-off in 1999
