An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 53

1995 Lotus Elan M100 S2
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - N2 CAV

Chassis No. - SCC100ZT1SHA26549

M.O.T. - No M.O.T.

Odometer - 49,680

‘N2 CAV’ is No.549 of just 800 S2 versions of the M100 built prior to the model’s cessation and replacement by the Elise, and its silver bodywork is complemented by a blue and cream-coloured interior. The little Lotus has had just five keepers to date, who have apparently amassed no more than 49,680 miles between them. We understand the car has been in storage since 2011, but was running and fully street legal prior to the lay-up. The vendor tells us that the engine turns over freely, but recommends the cam belt should now be changed due its age and lack of use. In summary he regards all major aspects of the Elan as being in ‘average’ condition, and is now selling it complete with a degree of history, including a selection of old MOTs. An interesting example being sold at No Reserve

Being a small, fibreglass-bodied two-seater constructed over a rigid steel chassis, the M100 certainly conformed to the general philosophy of Lotus’s late founder, Colin Chapman. The major departure was the use of frontwheel drive – a configuration not employed by Lotus before or since. At launch, the pretty newcomer was described by Autocar as ‘the quickest point to point car available’. It was powered by a Lotus-modified 1,588cc DOHC Isuzu unit. Most customers opted for the SE model that featured a 162bhp turbocharged version of the engine and power steering as standard. Autocar’s test of the SE achieved an impressive

0-60mph time of 6.5 seconds and top speed of 137mph. By the time production of the S1 Elan ceased in 1992, some 3,855 examples had been delivered from the Hethel factory. Following Lotus’s acquisition by ACBN Holdings, a further 800 turbocharged S2-branded examples were built between 1994 and 1995.

In summary:

  • 549 of 800 S2s built, and therefore one of the last of the line
  • Will need a degree of recommissioning following 12 years of storage
  • Offered at No Reserve and with a non-transferable registration
