Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

  Lot 53

1999 Mercedes-Benz SL 320

Chassis No. - WDB1290642F179335

Registration - S433 HGX

Odometer – 89,725

Some cars lack presence. Not so ‘S433 HGX’ that has it spades. Resplendent in a deep shade of metallic blue that’s complemented soft blue leather upholstery, blue carpets, a black hood and unmarked silver alloy wheels, this righthand drive four-seater convertible would surely be the perfect transport for any sunny drive in the countryside. The vendor purchased the Mercedes in 2019 for exactly such trips. He informs us that the hood is in excellent condition and that the car comes complete with factory hard top, making it a totally practical all-season vehicle. The service record confirms regular maintenance by Mercedes dealers or marque specialists from new, with the last stamp being entered in 2020. The Benz was apparently treated to a new battery in recent weeks and we understand it will be equipped with a fresh MOT certificate by the time of the sale. Displaying a relatively modest 89,725 miles and five owners from new, this very affordable example of first class Teutonic engineering is now available for a new owner to enjoy.

The Mercedes-Benz R129 Series of four-seat roadsters was manufactured from 1989 to 2001, during which time no less than 213,2001 vacated the company’s production line in Bremen. It was based on the shortened floorpan of the W124 Series saloon, while its shapely lines were sculpted by Bruno Sacco, and it bristled with innovative technology that included an automatically operated rollover bar for added safety. Over the course of its reign the model was offered with no less than 13 different engine options. That fitted to post 1998 SL 320s was a 3.2-litre SOHC V6 unit delivering 221bhp at 5,600rpm, which drove through a five-speed automatic gearbox.

In summary:

  • A well-presented example complete with hood and hard top
  • Extensive service record
  • Good colour combination
