  Lot 54

1965 Austin Gipsy SWB
Restored to a high standard throughout

Registration - CRT 459C

Chassis No. - G40M10/SE1261

M.O.T. - September 2023

Odometer - 10,852

If an Austin Gipsy is on your automotive shopping list then look no further, as this three-owner, short wheelbase diesel-powered example is going to be extremely hard to better. The subject of an earlier restoration, it is understood to have served time on a farm before being used as a recovery vehicle. It was acquired by the vendor in 2016, who subsequently treated it to further refurbishment, since when it has seen very little use, but won a number of awards. The 4x4 features lustrous green bodywork, green vinyl interior trim and a khaki-coloured tilt, and rides on recently repainted black steel wheels. Its go-anywhere specification includes: winch, tow hooks front and rear, quarter bumpers, full-width sunshield, original built-in tyre pump, load bay light, cab-mounted classic fire extinguisher, seat cushion covers and air horns. The vendor is only the third keeper of the Gipsy that currently displays just 10,852 miles from new. He grades the three-seater bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’ and the BMC engine, transmission and interior as ‘good’, and is now offering this all-but-immaculate survivor complete with an MOT valid to September 1 next year.

The Austin Gipsy was introduced in 1958 as a replacement for the Champ and was intended to compete head-on with the ubiquitous Land Rover. Despite their visual similarities, the rivals were very different under the skin. For example, the Austin boasted an all-steel body and fully independent suspension utilising Flexitor rubber units developed by Alex Moulton (the man responsible for the Mini's rubber cone system). Power came from either a 2,199cc OHV four-cylinder petrol engine or 2,178cc diesel unit of 55bhp. They drove all four wheels via an all-synchromesh, four-speed gearbox coupled to a high/low ratio transfer box. The Series II Gipsy of 1960 featured tougher trailing arms, lever-arm rather than telescopic dampers, and softer Flexitor units. There was no Series III Gipsy, but at the end of 1962 the leaf-spring equipped Series IV appeared (though, Flexitor units were still available on the 90-inch short wheelbase version until 1965). Gipsy production ceased in 1968 after 21,208 examples had been sold.

In summary:

  • A truly splendid example of a now very rare model
  • Just three owners and an indicated 10,852 miles from new
  • Restored to a very high standard throughout
