The Bolesworth Castle October 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 54

1982 Delorean DMC-12
A credible 5,926 miles from new

Registration - CVN 821Y

Chassis - SCEDT26T4DD020035

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 5,926

This remarkably original example of the model immortalised by the film Back to the Future could, very fittingly, be described as a ‘time warp’ car. One of the last vehicles produced by DeLorean, it began life as a lefthand drive export model that was repatriated to the UK in late 2021, at which point it received the registration ‘CVN 821Y’. The car’s first MOT certificate shows a mileage of 5,942, since when just 83 more miles have been added. Service records show that the only work carried out in the car’s 41 years has been servicing / recommissioning and minor repairs. The current owner, and sole UK custodian, states that: the DMC-12s condition is ‘excellent’ throughout, with no rips, tears or cracking of the grey leather trim (a known issue with the model); the car has been dry-stored and run regularly; the automatic transmission ‘works well and its changes are smooth’; and that the car ‘drives beautifully’. ‘CVN 821Y’ is now offered complete with original radio/cassette player, workshop manual, parts manual, and servicing receipts dating back to 2003. This is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the last of the original DeLoreans, a head-turning piece of automotive history.

The DMC-12 was the sole product of the DeLorean Motor Company that manufactured cars in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland from January 1981 until entering liquidation at the end of the following year. Three years later the DeLorean secured its position in popular culture when one starred as a time machine in Back to the Future. Impossible to confuse with any other car, the DeLorean was penned by Italian maestro Giorgetto Giugiaro and notable for its gullwing doors and unpainted stainless steel outer panels. Following pre-production problems, the vehicle was largely re-engineered by Lotus, resulting in a backbone chassis and running gear very similar to that of the Esprit. Power came from a rear-mounted 2,849cc V6 petrol engine provided by the Peugeot-Renault-Volvo consortium. This gave 150bhp in European specification but some 20bhp less when equipped with emission equipment for the US market – the region in which most examples were sold. The positioning of the engine resulted in a weight distribution of 35F/65R.

In summary:

  • A time warp example of the Back to the Future model
  • Credible indicated total mileage of just 5,942
  • Just one UK keeper to date
