  Lot 54

1986 Ford MK3 1.6i Cabriolet

Registration - D561LFX

Chassis No. - WF0LXXGKALFG39804

M.O.T. - TBC

Odometer - 133,070

When is an Escort XR3i not an XR3i? Well, judging by ‘D561 LFX’, when it’s fitted with a Zender bodykit, as it gives the car a very different, rather up-market, personsa. The vendor informs us that it was installed by the previous owner, for whom the Escort was ‘a labour of love’, on which he ‘spent a small fortune’. The Ford is finished in the pleasing colour of Azure metallic blue, trimmed in blue-piped grey cloth, and rides on a new set of RS alloy wheels. The vendor considers the whole car to be ‘clean and tidy’ and says the underside ‘appears to be rot-free’, and adds that the convertible roof ‘is in good condition and operates as it should’. A data check shows that ‘D561 LFX’ was technically written off due to fire damage in 1994, but this automotive phoenix has clearly risen safely from those ashes. It is now offered for sale complete with Pipercross air filter, Sportex exhaust, Sony sound system, grille-mounted auxiliary lights, Scorpio alarm, carpet mats, JS Performance silicone coolant hoses, and Union Jack cam cover. There is also the intention of it having a new MOT in time for the sale.

The MKIII Escort launched in 1983 was a very different proposition from its predecessors. The most radical departure was the switch from rear to front wheel drive. However, everything else was new too – power came from a fresh range of CVH engines, and independent rear suspension replaced the previous semi-elliptic layout. From the outset a ‘hot hatch’ version was created to target the Golf GTi – the XR3 was born. Two years later fuel injection turned the model into the XR3i, and a cabriolet version was introduced for the first time. Made by Karmann, it was Ford’s first drop-top car since the Corsair of the ‘60s, and was initially available in Ghia or normal XR3i guise.

In summary:

• Equipped with rare Zender bodykit

• Features a new set of RS alloy wheels

• An attractively presented example inside and out
