An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 55

1961 Singer Gazelle Convertible
Comes complete with overdrive, period radio and badge bar

Registration - XDN 450

Chassis No. - B7035537HCO

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 96,625

‘XDN 450’ was first registered in April 1961 and acquired by the vendor during the lockdown period of 2020, since when it has been subjected to light use and currently displays an unwarranted but totally credible overall mileage of 96,625. During his tenure the brakes have been overhauled, the radiator re-cored and a reconditioned fuel pump and distributor installed, and he informs us that the floor has also been professionally welded and ‘appears to be very solid’. Overall he currently classes the bodywork as ‘good’, the four-cylinder engine as ‘average to good’, and the overdrive gearbox, red and white paintwork, and red vinyl interior trim as ‘average’. This very rare MKIIIB convertible is now being offered complete with three-point hood, period Radiomobile radio (which is present but currently no working), badge bar, green continuation logbook, handbook, workshop manual, tax discs from 1993 to 2010 and a selection of old MOTs, plus invoices relating to the recent bout of maintenance.

The Gazelle was the first model produced by Singer following its take-over by the Rootes Group in 1956. It differed from its Hillman Minx cousin in being powered by Singer’s own 1497cc OHC engine and having a bespoke nose featuring Singer’s traditional radiator grille. Production of the model spanned no less than 15 years, during which the specification was continually amended over seven primary generations. The line-up of body styles comprised a four-door saloon, two-door convertible and four-door estate car. The convertible had a two position hood that could be lowered completely or rolled back to just behind the front seats, while all four side-windows could be lowered flush with the body. A Series III convertible tested by The Motor achieved a 0-60mph time of 21.2 seconds and top speed of 83.4mph. Total production of the MKIIIB version as offered here was 13,272.

In summary:

  • A very presentable Gazelle convertible of which very few remain
  • Accompanied by invoices confirming recent maintenance
  • Comes complete with overdrive, period radio and badge bar
