March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 55

1972 Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Veloce
By Bell & Colvill

Registration - XJB 88L

Chassis No. - 2470447

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 36,644

There has never been another car quite like Alfa’s legendary Spider, the look and sound of which could only be Italian. This Bell & Colvill-supplied righthand drive, second generation 2000 Veloce is unusual in matching deep blue paintwork and a black hood with blue-piped ivory leather interior trim – most examples were upholstered in vinyl and the vendor informs us that only 50 were produced in the same pleasing colour combination as ‘XJB 88L’. The vendor, who acquired the well-presented Alfa in 2019, informs us that replacements for part of the door trim, gear lever gaitor and nearside indicator are on order and will be fitted prior to the sale. He says the Spider has recently benefited from new brakes and ‘is in good order and runs well’. In summary he grades the much-vaunted twin-cam engine, five-speed manual gearbox, bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’ and the paintwork as ‘average’, and is selling the Alfa complete with large history file. The odometer currently displays a total mileage of 36,644.

Production of the Spider commenced in 1966, just one year before the model was immortalised by the Dustin Hoffman film ‘The Graduate’. The chassis was based on that of the Giulia 105, and the Series 1 examples were powered by a 1,570cc version of Alfa’s sonorous four-cylinder twin-cam unit. The sporting specification included independent front suspension, disc brakes and a five-speed manual gearbox. In 1967, the Duetto was replaced by the 1750 Spider Veloce, the Series 2 version of which arrived in 1970, at which point the original rounded tail was replaced with a distinctive ‘Kamm’ design. A year later engine capacity was increased to 1,962cc, creating the first Spider capable of over 120mph. The Series 3 variant broke cover in 1982, a year after which a major styling revamp brought rubber tipped bumpers and rubber rear spoiler, plus a new centre console and revised facia.

In summary:

  • A tidy righthand drive example
  • Features leather trim and rare colour combination
  • Comes complete with a large history file
