The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 55

1972 Fiat 500 L
Desirable right hand drive

Registration - MXF 890K

Chassis No. - 3000358

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 45,562

The modern Fiat 500 is a cute package, but there’s nothing quite like the charm of the original Nuova 500 for bringing a smile to one’s face. The body of this delightful UK example (‘Little Blue’) was restored by a former keeper, apparently renowned for his work on AC Cobras. It was then mainly stored for seven to eight years before being acquired by the vendor in 2019, who has since invested time and funds on bringing the mechanicals up to scratch and fully fit for modern traffic. The original powerplant has been replaced by one of 650cc that’s been converted for unleaded fuel and features a larger-than-standard sump and Gianni alloy rocker cover, as well as a refurbished alternator and replacement starter motor and carburettor. The unit drives through a Fiat 126 gearbox with synchromesh on 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear. The braking system has been fully overhauled and treated to a front-end disc conversion, while the dampers and steering linkages have also been replaced. The vendor currently classes the transmission and bodywork as ‘excellent’, the engine and blue paintwork as ‘good’, and the original black interior trim as ‘average’. As a result of now needing a car with automatic transmission he is reluctantly selling ‘MXF 890K’, which comes complete with owner’s handbook, workshop manual and a collection of invoices.

The so-called Nuova 500 was designed by Dante Giacosa. At its introduction in July 1957 the little Fiat was powered by a twin-cylinder engine of 479cc, the maximum power of which was a mere 13bhp. However, with a dry weight of just 470kg, it could nevertheless exceed 50mph and average 60mpg. Tough, economic, reliable and sensibly-priced, it made car ownership a reality for millions for whom it had previously been a mere dream, and a 500 was the first car for countless teenagers – Grand Prix drivers Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi included. By 1965 the engine capacity had grown to 499.5cc, raising the output to 22bhp and the top speed to 60mph. The last 500 rolled off the production line in 1975, by which time no less than 3.25 million had been built.

In summary:

  • A well-presented example displaying just 45,562 total miles
  • Bodywork professionally restored by a previous keeper
  • Features upgraded engine, gearbox and brakes
