An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 56

1956 Morris Minor Traveller
Uprated with 1275cc engine

Registration - 463 UXA

Chassis No. - FLE11/410280

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 70,569

‘463 UXA’ was first registered in April 1956, making it among the last of the split-screen Minors. As such it would have originally been powered by an 803cc version of BMC’s ubiquitous A Series engine, but that has subsequently been supplanted by the 1275cc unit from a Morris Marina, as has the related gearbox. The performance of the Minor will therefore have been greatly improved, as will its road-holding courtesy of the car’s replacement wheels that feature a greater offset than standard. Once green, the Minor is nowadays finished in a pleasing shade of pale blue that’s a perfect match for the interior trim. The vendor presently considers the engine and transmission to be in ‘excellent’ order and classes the estate car bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’. The venerable Morris is being offered complete with factory-fitted heater, temperature gauge, Kenwood radio/cassette, K&N pancake air filter for its SU carburettor, two keys and a history file containing a selection of old tax discs and MOT certificates.

Morris’s Minor is almost as universal a symbol of England as the London bus and the red telephone box and, with over 1.6 million manufactured over a 23-year reign, is one of the most successful British cars of all time. Designed by Alec Issigonis (who also penned the ubiquitous Mini), the model was unveiled at the 1948 Earls Court Motorshow with the two-door saloon and tourer versions being the first versions to be offered. The four-door saloon followed in 1950 and the popular Traveller, van and pick-up variants completed the range two years later. The first iteration, the MM, was produced from 1948 to 1953. Power came from a 918cc straight-four, side-valve engine producing 27.5bhp. The Series II iteration of 1952 saw the original unit replaced by the new, Austin-designed 803cc OHV A Series one. Series II production ran for four years, during which 269,838 saloons, convertibles and Travellers were produced.

In summary:

  • A tidy six-keeper example displaying 70,569 miles from new
  • Uprated with 1275cc Morris Marina engine and gearbox
  • Rides on wider-than-standard wheels shod with Marshal tyres
