March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 56

1967 Morris Minor Traveller

Registration - YHR 616E

Chassis No. - M-AW5-D/1189428-M

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

‘YHR 616E’ is a 1967 Traveller, so benefits from having the 1098cc version of the A Series engine which powered the last nine years’-worth of Minor production. We understand from the vendor that it has also recently undergone a nut and bolt restoration, and it is clear from the photos that the underside is rot-free and well protected. He suggests that the paintwork has perhaps suffered somewhat in the subsequent period of storage, and there is no doubt the Morris would be further improved by a respray. The integral woodwork is in sound order and the interior trim good overall considering it is now 56 years-old – one obvious departure from original specification is the use of plastic rather than carpet for the flooring. Among the many parts replaced during the restoration were: brakes, brake pipes, bushes, bearings, exhaust system, indeed ‘pretty much anything underneath’, while sensible upgrades include a brake servo, electronic ignition, and modern high power alternator and starter motor. As a result, the vendor currently grades the engine and manual gearbox as ‘excellent’, the bodywork and upholstery as ‘good’ and paintwork as ‘average’. The odometer currently stands at 72,557 miles.

Designed by Alec Issigonis, the Morris Minor was unveiled at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show. With the Series II of 1952 came a new, Austin-designed engine – the ‘A Series’ 803cc OHV unit. The more major update of 1956 saw the engine increased in capacity to 948cc (the car was now renamed the Minor 1000), the rear window of the saloon enlarged and the split-screen front one replaced with a single glass. The final iteration appeared in 1962 and featured a further increase in engine capacity to 1098cc. The practical Traveller versions were assembled at the MG plant in Abingdon from front halves built at Cowley and the timber-framed rear sections fashioned in Coventry. Total production was just over 180,000.

In summary:

  • The subject of a relatively recent nut and bolt restoration
  • Benefits from brake servo and high power alternator and starter
  • A solid example that would be further improved by a respray
