September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 56

1968 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Coupe
Current ownership for more than 28 years

Registration - TVB 29F

Chassis No. - 1E 21794

M.O.T. - TBC

Odometer - 58,216

Most E-Types have been restored at least once by now or are in desperate need of such attention, so it’s nice to come across an apparently unmolested example that, according to Experian Autocheck, has only had five keepers from new. Moreover, it has remained in the most recent one’s care for no less than 28 years. Its accompanying Heritage Certificate confirms that it is a Series 1½ model that was manufactured on March 15, 1968 and despatched to the supplying dealer, Henlys of London, on April 18 of the same year. The vendor describes his annual mileage as ‘modest’, which would account for the pleasingly low overall figure 58,216, which equates to less than 2,000 miles per annum from new. We understand the clutch was replaced in 1997 and that the brakes have been uprated by way of a servo. The only other obvious departure from standard is the Webasto sunroof that will get the seal of approval from the sun worshippers among you. Finished in Old English White and trimmed in black leather, ‘TVB 29F’ is considered by the vendor to have ‘good’ 4.2-litre XK engine, four-speed manual gearbox, coupe bodywork, paintwork and upholstery, and he is now offering the car complete with the aforementioned Heritage Certificate and a substantial file of other documentation covering his 28 years of ownership.

1968 model year E-Types have been retrospectively dubbed Series 1½ cars. The changes that distinguish them from the preceding Series 1 models were largely introduced to satisfy the increasingly safety oriented federal regulations and included: open rather than enclosed headlights, black-painted ribbed cam covers, twin cooling fans, and adjustable seat backs. Just 1,949 Series 1½ coupes were produced, of which only 375, such as the sale car, were righthand drive.

In summary:

  • A pleasingly unmolested example
  • Just 58,216 miles and six owners from new
  • Has remained in the current ownership for 28 years
